Brahms' Hungarian Dance No. 5 is one of the most famous pieces from his Hungarian Dances collection, composed in 1869. Based on traditional Hungarian folk melodies and rhythms, this lively and spirited piece captures the energy and flair of Eastern European gypsy music. Dance No. 5 is characterized by its dynamic contrasts, alternating between fast and slow sections, creating a sense of drama and excitement. Originally written for piano four hands, it has been arranged for various ensembles and is celebrated for its fiery, vibrant style and infectious rhythms.

There are many versions of this tune, and the one that I picked for this tutorial is intermediate level as it does require shifting to at least third position, playing double stops, and optional off the string bowing. However, this version is a bit easier than the original version by Brahms. If you're interested in learning the original, check out my course where I guide you through the piece note by note, including important techniques, practice along videos, and the sheet music.

Brahms Hungarian Dance No. 5 is in the key of G minor, so there are 2 flats, B flat and E flat. It is in 2/4 time, so there are 2 beats per measure. Although this piece involves several tempo changes, I've kept the tempo consistent in the tutorial to help make it easier to follow. Download your free sheet music and practice along with me!
