5 Film Music Songs for Violin Beginners

Movie soundtracks hit different, am I right?! 😅 However, film music is known for being pretty advanced and relatively inaccessible for beginners. In this post, I've compiled a list of 5 of my favorite pieces from movies that anyone can play-and the free sheet music too!

#1 Boccherini Minuet

I know what you might be thinking..Meghan, isn't this a piece from Suzuki Book 2?! Yes, you're right, it is! However, this piece has been featured in many movies; the most notable being Ferris Bueller's Day Off. This piece is playing in the background when Ferris and his friends almost run into his dad at the fancy restaurant. This piece doesn't require shifting; the hardest things are the trills and fast notes.

#2 Hedwig's Theme

If you love Harry Potter like I do, then you will be very pleased to know this song is actually pretty easy for us to play. What I especially like about this piece is that it is in a minor key. The majority of beginner violin music is happy and upbeat; this song has a spooky and mysterious vibe which makes it really fun to play.

#3 My Heart Will Go On

This is one of those pieces that you really love or you really hate. There's no doubt that this song is one of the most popular songs of all time, but there's also validity to the argument that it is overplayed.

#4 Moon River

Moon River from Breakfast at Tiffany's is a beautiful but melancholic tune. It's a great opportunity to work on sound, dynamics, and vibrato.

#5 Colors of the Wind

If you're a Disney fan, then you're in luck! Many disney songs, like Colors of the Wind from Pocahontas, are very beginner friendly. Other Disney violin beginner tunes include Can You Feel the Love Tonight from The Lion King, Let it Go from Frozen, Once Upon a December from Sleeping Beauty, and Tale as Old as Time from Beauty and the Beast.

What's your favorite film song to play on violin? Leave a comment and let me know!
