La Vie en Rose is a classic French love song made famous by Édith Piaf in 1947. It portrays the blissful emotions of being in love, describing how the world transforms into a dreamlike state when gazing into a lover's eyes or hearing their voice. The title, which translates to "Life in Pink," symbolizes seeing life through a rosy, optimistic lens brought on by the happiness and comfort of love.
This song is very well known, but I did not know the name or origin of it until I was introduced to it by one of my students. Since then, I have taught it to a handful of others, and played it at several weddings.
This version of the tune is very beginner friendly and can be played entirely in first position. It's in the key of C Major, so there are no sharps or flats, and it is in 4/4 time, so there are four quarter notes per measure. The trickiest thing about it is the rhythm. The easiest way to solidify the rhythm is to count in eighth notes rather than in quarter notes. This will make it easier to count the dotted quarter notes. Staring in measure 13, there is also some syncopation. Syncopation means that the important beats are not on the "big" beats: in this case, beats 1, 2, 3, and 4. In measure 13, the important beat comes on the "and" or the second half of beat one.
