Shostakovich's Waltz No. 2 is a lively yet haunting piece that blends elegance with a sense of underlying mystery. Part of his Suite for Variety Orchestra, it features a memorable, sweeping melody that shifts between lighthearted charm and a darker, almost melancholic tone. Often used in films and performances, the waltz evokes the feel of a grand ballroom with an air of bittersweet nostalgia. Its dynamic tempo changes and contrasting moods make it one of Shostakovich’s most famous and evocative compositions, capturing both beauty and complexity.
This piece is in the key of C minor, so there are 3 flats: B flat, E flat, and A flat. The one you're most likely to forget is the A flat-no open A strings in this piece! 😅 Like all waltzes, this piece is in 3/4 time. Shifting is not necessary but it does greatly reduce your string crossings, so I suggest shifting to avoid them wherever you see fit. Download the free sheet music and watch the tutorial below!
