Violin Setup & Accessories You Actually Need (and What’s a Waste of Money)

In this post, I'll share the violin accessories you actually need, so you don't waste your hard-earned money!
Essentials
Case
This one might be obvious, but you need a place to store your violin! Even if you keep your violin out most of the time, you never know when you'll need to travel or store it for any reason. I currently use this Bam case, but honestly I just bought it because it was trendy. Another very high quality, yet expensive case brand is Musafia. Both are great quality, but Bam cases tend to be lighter, and Musafia cases tend to be more protective. If you don't travel a lot with your instrument, Musafia could be the way to go. However, you do not absolutely need a trendy or expensive case; if you purchase a violin outfit, it will come with a case that should work just fine.
Rosin
The rosin that I currently use is Leatherwood Rosin, and I love it because the sound is very crisp and clear. However, it is definitely on the expensive side and you absolutely do not need to spend that much on rosin. I used Bernardel Rosin for several years, and it served me well. I have also had a few students switch to Jade Rosin, which is hypoallergenic. I was very impressed with the sound.
Strings
You can't play the violin without strings! 😅 The strings that I'm currently using are Warchal's The Beast strings, and I love them. They are super loud and clear, and the E string rarely whistles. Previously, I used Peter Infeld strings, and really like their brightness. A great middle of the range string in both price and sound are Dominants. They work well on almost any instrument. For children and complete beginners, I recommend the D'Addario Prelude strings because they are super affordable.
Shoulder Rests
This is an essential for me! The one I currently use I've had since I was 12, and it is quite literally falling apart. The next shoulder rest I purchase will definitely be the Kun Bravo; my husband uses this one and it is extremely comfortable and lightweight. I also highly recommend the Bon Musica, especially for those with long necks because it is easily adjustable. However, these are all a bit more pricey; the standard Kun should work just fine for most players.
Stand
Posture is extremely important, and using a music stand is the best way to ensure that you are demonstrating proper posture while playing. I personally use a Manhasset stand, which is pretty standard. For portable stands, I highly recommend the Peak stand because it is sturdy and has a full back rather than a wire back.
Tuner/Metronome
It's essential to tune your violin (duh!) and a metronome is a great practice tool. The one that I personally use is a Korg, however, there are tons of free apps and tools out there. I needed one before the online options were out there!
Non-essentials
Multiple bows
Don't get me wrong, it's never a bad thing to have multiple bows, but it is not an essential. It's better to have one high quality bow than 2 mediocre bows.
Fancy violin bag or wrap
There are several companies out there that make absolutely gorgeous silk violin bags and wraps. While they are beautiful, they are not necessary to keep your violin clean. Simply wipe it down with a microfiber cloth after each practice session.
Humidifier
If you do not already use a humidifier for your daily life, there is no need to buy one specifically for your violin.
A wall hook
Some students prefer to leave their violin out of the case most of the time because it motivates or reminds them to practice. If this is you, you do not need a wall hook for your violin; just leave it in a safe space.
Geared Pegs
Yes, geared pegs can be super helpful, but fine tuners serve you just as well.
An electric or silent violin
If you're worried about your neighbors listening to you when you practice, just use a practice mute.
Ipad
Unless you are a professional, gigging musician, you do not need an iPad to read your sheet music off of. They can be extremely useful, and if you already have one-go for it! But it's not an essential purchase.
