Antonio Vivaldi's Violin Concerto in A minor, RV 356, is one of his most well-known works, featured in his collection L'estro Armonico, Op. 3, No. 6. It follows the typical Baroque concerto structure with three movements: Allegro, Largo, and Presto.

  • The first movement (Allegro) is lively and energetic, showcasing virtuosic violin passages with a dialogue between the soloist and the orchestra.

  • The second movement (Largo) is slower and more lyrical, featuring a delicate violin melody supported by a simple harmonic backdrop.

  • The final movement (Presto) is fast-paced and exuberant, filled with rapid violin runs and dynamic contrasts.

This concerto is a perfect example of Vivaldi's rhythmic vitality, melodic inventiveness, and technical demands on the soloist. It remains a favorite in the violin repertoire, and one that I always enjoy to play and to listen to.

This is an intermediate level piece, and can be found in Suzuki Book 4. The third movement of this concerto uses 1st, 2nd, and 3rd position, and is meant to be played at a brisk speed. When playing this movement, be aware of the accidentals, shifts, and dynamics. This movement works best in the lower middle half of the bow.

If you love this piece, check out my tutorial of the first movement.
